Description
The Schwetzingen Palace, located on the scenic route from Heidelberg to Schwetzingen, is a magnificent architectural ensemble combining rich history and cultural heritage. The entrance gates of the palace are decorated with two gatehouses, which now house a cozy cafe and a souvenir shop. The spacious courtyard is surrounded by outbuildings, and the living quarters of the palace are located in the western part and in the center of the building.
In the period from 1975 to 1991, large-scale restoration work was carried out in the Schwetzingen Palace, thanks to which the interiors acquired the appearance of the XVIII century. The mezzanine of the palace now functions as a museum, where visitors can get acquainted with the guest rooms and private chambers of Elector Karl Theodor and his wife. Of particular interest are the rooms on the third floor, dating back to the Baden era, decorated with handmade wallpaper by Zuber in 1804.
The Schwetzingen Palace Court Theater, built in the classical style, first opened its doors on July 15, 1753 with Ignaz Holzbauer's opera Son of the Woods. Despite periods of neglect, the theater building was completely restored during the restoration works of 1936-1937 and 2002-2003. Today, the theater welcomes guests again, offering a variety of cultural events.
The Schwetzingen Palace Park is divided into two parts: a French Baroque park and an English park. From a cultural and historical point of view, the park includes the "Park of Allegories" with statues of allegorical characters and the "Park of Reasonableness", where the temple of Minerva, the Mosque, the temple of Mercury, the Temple of Apollo, the temple of Forest Botany, the Roman Water Castle and the Arboretum with rare tree species are located. These park structures, created in the spirit of the Enlightenment era, promote positive and creative thinking.
